Today I’m hanging with Loleng our lead rice farmer and learning more about growing rice. We are growing organic red Balinese rice @soulshinebali , here’s why. After World War 2, in order to feed a vast nation that was starving in many places, the government of Indonesia brought in a hybrid rice from the USA that could be harvested 3 times a year. They instructed every family to grow this rice. This helped feed lots of people but caused other problems, as this new rice had only a fraction of the nutrients as the native Balinese rice which can only be harvested twice a year. The problems were exacerbated, when politicians at the coaxing of multi national companies, started encouraging moms to use infant formula rather than breast feeding. An average Bali farm worker could not afford a full months supply of formula so when they ran out between pay checks, they would substitute the formula with rice water, which looked the same, but has almost zero nutrition. Babies and moms both suffered as a result of poor nutrition. @bumisehatbali Natural Birthing Center has made decades of progress in encouraging moms to breast feed again and farmers around the country are slowly reintroducing the traditional Balinese rice like the kind we are growing here at Soulshine. On January 12th we are doing a benefit concert at the Green School in Bali in support of the environmental teachings of the school and in support of Bumi Sehat Birthing center. Come on out and support! Give a shout out to the farmers around the world who keep our belly’s filled, our bodies strong and the next generation thriving!!! @iburobin @bumisehatbali #soulshinebali #rice #organic #organicfarming #soulrocker #music #musicianlife #loveoutloud #stayhuman #bali #ubud photo by @saraagahfranti
