We’re helping protect the #pangolin, the world’s most trafficked mammal, using their family tree! Pangolins—also known as scaly anteaters—may look otherworldly, but our scientists are helping lead the way in understanding how the animals evolved and adapted. In a new study published in the Journal of Heredity, Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute scientists and partners present the most comprehensive evolutionary family tree for the eight known species of pangolins and provide a tool that will help conservationists better track how pangolins are being moved through the worldwide pangolin trade. This photo by study co-author Philippe Gaubert shows an illegally trafficked common African pangolin. #WeSaveSpecies @conservationnation @スミソニアン博物館
