Tribal communities are worse off than India’s average on a host of malnutrition indicators. As part of his investigation into starvation deaths in India, researcher Ashwin Parulkar visited Hindiyankalan, a drought-stricken village that has no electricity and is six miles from the nearest paved road. Families in this village rely on making scoops (winnowing baskets used to separate the husk from the grain) to earn a living. He took this picture of a woman making scoops in Hindiyankalan.
