The Tianjin Binhai Library took about three years to complete, from the first sketch to its recent opening outside Beijing. Dutch architectural firm MVRDV collaborated with the Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute (TUPDI) to create the five-story space that resembles a three-dimensional eye from the outside. The library features a luminous spherical atrium with bookshelves lining the walls—from floor to ceiling—and a potential capacity to house more than 1 million books. The shelves that contour the library’s walls were designed to hold more than books: visitors can walk among them. Some contain stacks of books but others have printed aluminum plates that mimic books—a feature that has prompted criticism that the much-touted space is "more fiction than books."
