I’m constantly asked to list my favorites throughout the years. somehow #Thriller never registers as my top 10 pick. I don’t even see it in my top 30. I don’t even consider #Thriller an album. Thriller is a social breakthrough. It took 4 cold months before the subject of #BeatIt broke ice amongst the South Philly “Ayos” at my school and my crew of inner city Norf Philly “Yo Baby Yos”. I couldn’t believe THOSE dudes would ever come to our side of the fence. It was so segregated that first quarter. They played softball on their side of the field. We played halfcourt our side. They sang about #JGiles’ angel in a #Centerfold & putting nickels in jukeboxes screaming #ILoveRockNRoll Meanwhile our summer was laced with #TheMessage & #PlanetRock. I don’t even think there was a true desire to mix it up. And then....suddenly they had names. And titles for the weird lunches they ate. And weird slang. And weird fashion. But here we were during 7th grade recess—-talking about how cool “Beat It” was. Then a week later Prince’s dancing on the #LittleRedCorvette video was the cool. —-slowly the curiosity started growing. @MTV was blossoming & the new birth of cool got unleashed in November. First w @Prince’s #1999 (wrote about that 3 weeks back) and now on Nov 30th w @MichaelJackson’s follow up to (“hey do you think this will outsell) #OffTheWall?” Ha ha. We ALL had our doubts. You can’t capture lightening in a bottle 2ce. OTF was an artistic achievement (just a fine damb record), a monumental achievement (the non disco/dance album aka #BOOGIE), a necessary achievement (MJ has been DYING for true artistic freedom since he was 16) and a record breaking achievement (at the time no album had 4 top 10 singles off one lp) no black artist sold 7 million units. MJ was on top of the world. Or so we thought..... #Thriller35
