Davis proved an elusive subject for Marshall, who, in order to gain his trust, presented him with a portrait he had taken of one of Davis’s heroes, the saxophonist, John Coltrane. Miles asked him, “Why don’t you take photographs of me like this?” Marshall replied: “Why don’t you let me?”
