When Senator Elizabeth Warren read out a letter from Coretta Scott King (the widow of Martin Luther King Jr.) during a Senate debate in February over Senator Jeff Sessions’ nomination for attorney general – a letter that in effect attacked his civil rights record – she was upbraided for breaking the rules (which forbid a member of Congress from impugning another) and dismissed. Of her dismissal, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell remarked: "She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted." Those final three words became a rallying cry for Senator Warren and all women tired of being silenced by men.
