Photograph by @paulnicklen // The wandering spirit! A female Kermode Bear walks along the edges of a creek in search of salmon. Soon, this gorgeous animal will settle in for a long winters sleep and the more fat she carries into the den with her the better. Bears have something called delayed implantation. One type of delayed implantation is obligate diapause, which is a mechanism to allow mammals to time the birth of their youngsters with favorable environmental conditions. The embryo does not immediately implant in the uterus, but it is maintained in a state or dormancy. No development takes place during this period and as a result the normal gestation period is extended, sometimes by as much a one year. I am glad my biology degree came in handy for something. #followme on @paulnicklen Taken last month while on assignment for @sea_legacy in the #GreatBearRainforest. #wondersofnature #nature #naturelovers #bear #spiritbear #hyperphagia #instagood #bear #beauty #love
