Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto // Badger scratching – I’m really pleased to announce that this image of a badger having a good old scratch has won the Animal Behaviour category in this years’ British Wildlife Photography Awards. I’ve been privileged over the last 7 years to have enjoyed continued success in this competition and this is my third category win as I previously won the Animal Behaviour category back in 2011 with my image of a grey heron which looked like it was walking on water. All told I’ve been incredibly fortunate in this competition to have won 26 individual awards featuring some 35 images which, given that I’ve been working full time on various house renovations for the last 5 years isn’t too bad! It will come as a surprise to no-one that this image was taken just a few miles from my Derbyshire home and it again reflects the merits of working over long time periods with local species, something that I know that I bang on about ad nauseum! Whilst the badger image was my only category win I was fortunate to have another images awarded in this years’ competition and so I’ll be looking to share these with you over the coming days. The encounter itself was especially memorable as it is rare that I see the badgers engaging in this kind of natural behaviour whilst out in the open and it’s always nice when wild animals turn their backs. If nothing else it either shows that they trust you completely or, as in this case, they have absolutely no idea that I was even there at all. This is what I believe gives the image its quiet, observational feel, an impression of an animal that is simply going about its life completely unaware that a strange, camouflaged numpty is lurking in the bushes nearby.
