As we continue to celebrate Leonard Bernstein’s 100th, I thought I'd share 2 of my favorite stories from our time together. One day Lennie called up & suggested we take a private tour of the Sistine Chapel. For months, Lennie had been saying he wanted to learn the authentic street way of saying "yo mama" but he kept confusing it with Yo-Yo Ma! We were lying on the floor staring up at the ceiling (which is forbidden during normal hours) & all of a sudden, the monsignor walked in, freaked & shooed us out in Italian. Lennie responded with "Yo mama!" I said, "Man, that's the right time & the right way to say it, but this is the wrong place!" ((:0)) There was another occasion when the Int’l Herald Tribune reviewed “Back on The Block” in 1990 & the headline said "Quincy Jones: Black Music's Bernstein" & Lennie sent me a letter in a purple envelope via the Savoy Hotel in London, that contained this torn off headline with a handwritten note that said "Dear Q, I wish I were white music's Quincy Jones." Receiving that was one of the absolute best honors. I spent my last dollar in 1958 to see West Side Story before I met him, so to have him send me this note years later just touched my soul. I miss U so much Lennie & wish you were still here with us making amazing music...and makin’ yo mama jokes!!...All my love Lennie...
