Here’s what our art critic Roberta Smith had to say about the 88-year-old artist behind these #selfieworthy scenes: “Sometimes I think Yayoi Kusama might be the greatest artist to come out of the 1960s and one of the few, thanks in part to her long life, still making work that feels of the moment. Other times I think she’s a bit of charlatan who produces more Kusama paintings than the world needs and stoops to conquer with mirrored ‘Infinity’ rooms that attract hordes of selfie-seekers oblivious to her efforts on canvas.” But, Roberta decided, the artist’s current 3-ring circus of exhibitions at @davidzwirner’s spaces in NYC argue in favor of greatness. The shows include 2 “Infinity” rooms, on West 19th Street, as well as paintings: “With their fluctuating rhythms and imaginative images,” Roberta writes, “they could even win over fans who only had eyes for her Instagrammable environments.” The #newZwirner space on East 69th Street is presenting “Infinity Nets,” a beautiful display of 10 paintings, all from this year. And the highlight of the Chelsea show “is a very large gallery lined — tiled really — with 66 double-hung canvases.” Swipe left (4 times) to see some of those canvases; along the way, see @vincenttullo’s photos of some Instagrammable moments from the @davidzwirner shows.
