What I do almost every day in these remarkable landscapes is fall. I fall countless times, sometimes off of the same little pebble sticking out of the wall, again and again. I beat my hands up until they bleed, torn up from unsuccessful efforts. I squish my feet into downsized rubber shoes to heighten sensitivity and control. I go through this process repetitively for the slight chance that I won’t fall and that I will feel this unparalleled, overwhelming sensation of personal satisfaction once I reach the top. Some trips, this moment doesn’t even happen. But there is always hope for when it does.
