In recent years, artist @frostjeff has watched as fires raged across the West Coast. "Fire is a natural part of nature," he tells TIME, "but [here's] what you’ll hear veteran firefighters say over and over: ‘I’ve never seen fire behavior like this." Just as he did in June 2015, when he shot this timelapse of the Lake Fire near California's Big Bear Lake, Frost recently chased the blazes in Sonoma and Napa that scorched thousands of acres and led to dozens of deaths. Based near Joshua Tree National Park, he shoots sequences of hundreds of still photos and then combines them into a video. His non-narrative film, California on Fire, will look at the role climate change plays in the increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires. Watch more on TIME.com. Video by @frostjeff
