Kermode or “Spirit” Bear in temperate rainforest – Photo by Kevin Schafer -– @schaferpho @ナショナルジオグラフィック // I spent a week last month tracking these remarkable white bears along Canada’s spectacular west coast. They are actually a rare white form of the black bear, their coloration a result of a recessive gene in a small, isolated population. There are less than 200 of these bears in existence on islands and adjacent mainland in a region known as the Great Bear Rainforest. In this situation, I wanted a picture that captured not just the animal itself, but the lush, moss-draped world it inhabits. The truth is, I saw this setting first... and then waited two days for a bear to pass through. Happily this female eventually obliged. #Greatbearrainforest #spiritbear #pacificwild #bcwild
