More than 1,000 years ago, #Iceland lost most of its trees. Blame the Vikings. They took their axes to the forests that covered a quarter of the countryside. Today, farming and grazing are next to impossible in many parts of Iceland, where our photographer @joshhaner traveled to take these photos. And loose soil, combined with strong winds, has led to sandstorms. Reforesting more of the countryside would have benefits beyond helping farmers and stopping sandstorms, though. As #climatechange becomes a greater concern, Iceland’s leaders see #reforestation as a way to help the country meet its climate goals. But getting forests back is no easy task. Even in a small country, a few million new trees a year is just a drop in the bucket. Jon Asgeir Jonsson, who’s pictured in the 2nd photo here, is helping the effort to reforest Iceland. For Jon, planting saplings usually starts with an evaluation of what’s already growing in that area. Then, he and his team plant an appropriate species. “We’d love to plant aspen,” he told our #climatechange reporter @henryfountain. “But sheep really love aspen.” No one expects that a quarter of Iceland will ever be covered in forests again. But to reach even modest gains, it’s going to take a long time. Visit the link in our profile or watch our #InstagramStory to learn more. #?
