Coming back after an injury isn’t just a physical process. First you cry and get pissed off, then you say “why me?” and “what if I could have that moment back?”, then you stay up all night and say,”is it ever gonna work like it used to?” Then you wake up the next morning and wake the eff up! You let go of all the negative shit that’s going to hold you back and you build a practice of positivity, self care, laughter when you fall and tenacity when you don’t feel like showing up to Physical Therapy. You ask for help. You follow instructions. You take inspiration from others. You listen to your body and breathe when you can’t feel your limbs. You start to see the swelling go down and the strength come back in tiny increments and you celebrate each of them like mini graduations. You use the frustrations of crutches, pain and uncertainty as lessons in patientce and use tenacity as your weapon to become stronger than you’ve ever been before. To do things you’ve never done before. Not just in your body but in your mind, heart and creativity, to live life differently than you did before part of you broke and needed repair. It’s not something that happens to you, it’s a decision you make each step of the way. I will be stronger, more resilient, kinder to myself and others, more focused and appreciative than I ever have been and I will help others find it as well. Then you cry again, get up the next morning and do it all over...that’s healing.
