The climax of the festival is the procession of three mikoshi shrines (miniature shrines). Traditionally accompanied by male and female lions, Sarutahiko, children, warriors, and priests on horseback, the procession wends its way through town. The photo shows a mikoshi being paraded in front of the head office of Gekkeikan and the main residence of the Okura family. The “Princess Sen” mikoshi, which was offered in 1597 to commemorate the birth of Tokugawa Ieyasu’s granddaughter, Sen, was part
of the procession until 1960. A new mikoshi has taken its place, as it now rests in the Gokonomiya-jinja Shrine owing to its immense two-ton weight. (photographed on Oct. 8)
