I'll never forget when Rod Temperton came out from the UK to visit me 6 months before we did "Off the Wall"...He wanted me to manage his band Heatwave, who had a hit with "Boogie Nights" in 1976. I heard their music & fell in love with it but I told him I didn't want to be a manager...But Rod & I really connected. He knew his stuff, had an excellent compositional instinct & wrote incredible music...It was as if we immediately became brothers. So, I called him 3 or 4 months later to write a couple of songs for Michael, & a few for Rufus & Chaka, who I was also producing at the time. Thinking we'd probably just pick one of the songs Rod submitted for Smelly, he sent us "Off the Wall," "Rock with You," & "Burn the Disco Out"...Well, as y'awl know...we ended up using all 3!! Then he wrote "Masterjam" & "Live in Me" for Rufus & Chaka. We had worked together since then, all the way up until his untimely passing, but I know we'll be brothers forever. He was simply the best friend you could ever ask for! Love & miss you more every day, Worms...Happy Birthday! I know you're probably collaborating with some angels on a new hit song! ((:0))
