The wrath inflicted by Hurricane Irma in the Caribbean and along the southeastern U.S. coastline came into focus on Sept. 11, 2017, after the deadly megastorm weakened. At one point, Irma was labeled the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the open Atlantic. The storm devastated islands from Barbuda to Cuba before slamming into Florida, where it uprooted trees, flooded streets and shredded houses. More than 6.5 million homes and businesses in Florida became powerless and some 180,000 huddled in shelters, the Associated Press reports. Several dozen deaths were reported in the Caribbean.
