Van Gogh painted as if he was writing a story to someone in a narrative of a seemingly vaulted, emotionally charged, newly devised pallet where the colors might have come to him synesthetically and as each manifested he stood, say, head down in an arena as a crude but beautiful black as night, uncastrated stock of balls bull and, on the other side, simultaneously, the balletic torero gleaming in sequins, poised: a thin manipulative veil draped over a fear that could erupt dormant volcanos. With each stroke of the brush came a falling of Angels and a choir of children singing of the second coming of Jesus in a moment. I watch him in my imagination as he attacks a thought, a churning feeling with his horse bristles, chasing it over the stretched skin, diving onto it as to attempt to arrest his fleeting whim. I see the sunflower, as stoic and short lived as he was, blossoming and wilting as if he knew life was more brief than anticipated. Each life in a moment so fleeting. And as I now see you, my love, behind the sunflower, we are all together. You color my eyes, darling -- my life, my dear -- with all the references and creations Van Gogh has thrown at us, as we play on our own canvas not sure whose brush tickles and twists us again and with great strength.
