"It's 9am. The birds today. Muddy must be over at Dock 23. She's on her electric cart; Winnie's with her, for sure. This goddamn jacket. This...goddamn...jacket. Not enough to keep you warm but too damp and too goddamn heavy to act like...like a damn...MARTY! HEY MARTY!!! Some damn kid down there's gunna fall in and then the boats are going to...MARTY! Excuse me. (Takes a sip of the 7-UP bottle). Ahhhhh. Sunshine. These cold and wrinkly ass steps. Sunshine. Goddamn. Ain't no earthquakes, any earthquakes. Just a bunch a fish. And the eclipse. Don't stare at the sun, she says! Don't stare at the sun. Well, Muddy, here's looking at you. I'm looking at you. I'm not staring at the damn sun, am I? And that little dog starts yappin, biting at the air like it's a goddamn postal worker's leg. I'm watchin him just do that: biting on a leg of air like he's going to chew it down to the air bone. (Looks around) Where is she? (Lights what's left of a cigarette). Bet it's late morning. That's what time it is. Hack. Hack a cough! I bet it's too late now. Sun's come up, is up, and the birds are thinking the fish are going to all surface at the same goddamn time. It'll be a party. A goddamn party. (Looks around) Muddy should be coming by soon enough. Sun'll go down before you know it, and it'll just be a day. (Takes another sip). I bet Burney's up at that church. I'll go see if he has some grub. Goddamn kid's gunna fall in. MARTY? My last smoke.
