Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Mallard ducklings - There is a unique sense of intimacy created when we are able to shoot animals at their eye level. In addition to this increased level of intimacy another advantage is that by shooting with this low level perspective it makes the background more distant and therefore easier to throw out of focus. On the flip side then if you shoot directly down on a subject this has the effect of making the backdrop much closer, thereby making it potentially more distracting. By shooting this image in this way I’ve been able to completely exclude the cluttered and messy backdrop and instead simply draw out the only part of it that is complementary to the image, that is the lush, green colour. Of course by completely excluding the backdrop then the image can feel a little one dimensional but my decision making regarding the background is always based on a few simple questions. Does the environment in which the particular subject is found add anything to the image, or does its inclusion diminish it? Also, is it even possible to include the backdrop given the focal length of the lens being used and the subjects distance from the backdrop? With this image then I would have struggled to include the backdrop, even at F22 but as it was I decided to exclude it altogether by shooting at about F5.6. This gave me a little more depth of field than at F4, to hopefully bring more of the ducklings in to focus, but not so much that distractions in the background, like stray, messy branches etc, started to be brought in to annoying levels of detail.
