Half the time when I run, whether in the city, the suburbs or in nature, I probably look like a lunatic. Because, when I listen to music while I run, the beat, or the spirit, or the groove, or the JOY of the song, mixed with the exhalation I feel at being ABLE to use my body so freely...generally results in some form of skipping, spinning, dancing and/or laughing. I, honestly, can hardly help myself. (In this vid I'm listening to Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Home - link in bio. How can you NOT move to that song???? ?) At home, I try to do my strength-building exercises and, inevitably it with deteriorate into a wild and free "dance-like-nobody's watching" session (Mumford and Sons Pandora - like in this vid) OR it will become a kind of grinding, sensual, hip-hop blend (anything with just the right groove). No matter what the music, I move to it.
I don't know which came first: the joy or the movement? The movement brings me so much joy, which feeds into my desire to move, which feeds me more joy, which...you get the idea. I DO know that the only other activity I do that makes me sweat and burn the way the dancing can, is sprinting.
This expression of JOY is one of my BEST workouts ? and I believe that this kind of happy, spontaneous, expressive, not-disciplined workout is one of the healthiest ways to build joy. ?
