Animals that fly or swim were common subjects for Constantin Brancusi, and he often sought to depict their speed and movements. In "The Miracle (Seal [I])" (1930-32), the simplified form suggests not only the work’s namesake, but also its fluid means of locomotion. By balancing the sculpture delicately on the limestone base and giving it a pronounced upward thrust, Brancusi captured the seemingly weightless body of the seal suspended in water. The effect is striking given the significant mass of the marble work.
