Photographed by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Mountain hare yawning - One of the most useful pieces of advice that I could give to any aspiring photographer would be to strive to find the flaws in your own images. What is it that lets them down a little, what troubles you, irks you and what might you have been able to do better? If it’s simply a grab shot, like my tiger image from a couple of days ago then there’s little that I could have done so I accept the obvious flaws and remain philosophical about it. If however I’m working on a project, or with a confiding species such as this mountain hare then identifying, and subsequently rectifying the flaws in the field will help to elevate your images to at least being the best that they can be. I had lain next to this hare for a few hours and it was completely ambivalent about my presence. Every 30 minutes or so it would sit up, have a wash, maybe have a nibble and then return to sleep. This predictable, repeat behaviour allowed me time to scrutinise any flaws in my images and the most obvious one was some distracting heather poking through the snow. Now it’s fair to say that I’m not necessarily a massive fan of these kind of blurred background, blurred foreground, one dimensional portraits but in this situation I’d decided that it was the best option. Nevertheless the dark, out of focus heather was an obvious flaw and it needed sorting. Sliding forward on my belly I halved the distance between myself and the hare and then I gently built a little snow bank, just high enough to obscure the annoying heather. Returning to my original position it was then just a case of waiting for the hare to wake up again only this time I was treated to a yawn, an indication at least that the hare was not in the slightest bit troubled by my presence.
