We didn't miss a single sunrise, saw every sunset, and caught each ray in between. We woke up at 3am every morning with jet fuel coffee and the resolution that the only way to get out of the middle of the desert is the same way you came in--with your feet.
It was illuminating.
Walking 100 miles along the White Rim Trail in Canyonlands NP in the middle of summer is something most people wouldn't do. It's far, it's hot, it's strenuous, it's damn near impossible according to certain park rangers.
It's also liberating, beautiful, fulfilling, and (get this) fun--if you let it be.
There wasn't a mile that went by without a communal laugh from our motley crew. There also wasn't a mile that went by without some sort of pain thanks to the boiling hot sun, killer mosquitos, and our feet that were slowly turning to hamburger in our hiking shoes.
But that's the beauty of it: We knew it would be hard, but we didn't know it would be so fun.
I'm leaving 100 miles of the White Rim with a million moments tucked away in my mind that will turn into memories as me and the rest of us Canyonland crazies amble on out of our adventure and back into the world with full confidence that tough roads will continue to bring us all back together in beautiful places.
