[Tech Tip Tuesday]: Dangling rope-less 50' above the ocean... with nothing to catch you but the salt water below is my kind of 'beach vacation' • • This past March @profotoglobal emailed me out of the blue and asked if I'd be interested in trying out one of their new B1X flash units on location, of my choosing. After freezing my butt off in Iceland for a couple weeks, and breaking my ankle in the process, I thought some warm weather might be good for the mind and body. Fast forward a couple weeks later and I was shooting this image of @edumarin1 and @ltjian in Mallorca, Spain lit with a single strobe off to the right side of the frame (swipe right to see a test shot from the same setup). I shoot a lot with a single flash out on location. The addition of light really helps guide the viewer to look where you'd like in the frame. And because it's a single light, it usually feels more natural. Here we placed the strobe off to the right of the climber because it did several things with just one light: 1) It illuminates the action and makes the climber pop from the sky. Notice the climber is the brightest subject in frame. 2) Because the light is off axis from the lens, I get both light AND shadow. This is essential to building depth to my frame. Notice that you can see the features of the cliff face because of the light and shadow. 3) It looks fairly natural because it's a single source and I can easily control the power using the remote on my camera.
