Photo and Text by @juansharks | One of the amazing things about tiger sharks on a pelagic dive in Hawaii is how their presence affects the other sharks’ behavior. There is a social hierarchy in place both within and across different species based on their position in the water column. Individuals higher up are considered more dominant, and whenever there is a tiger shark in the area the other sharks usually tend to drop down and give them some extra space. Learning more about shark behavior and their seasonal movements is one of the best ways to ensure a peaceful coexistence with these important animals. While we cannot control how sharks behave or where they decide to migrate, we can learn more about them and adjust our behavior and habits accordingly. Sharks have called our oceans home for over 400 million years, and we are merely visitors.
