Sorry for the long post, but I don't have a blog so you guys get it all, ha! I spent some time in our nations capitol these past couple of days and am happy to report I fell even more in love with our country! We have a system of government that is far from perfect. It's big and layered and complicated, but I was excited to be reminded of this, it really is our government. Your voice really does make a difference. Not my voice because I'm a "celebrity," but your voice. Over and over again while on The Hill, I heard this message from people all across the political aisle...The things you care about matter to the people who represent you. They are elected by you, they work for you. And trust me, they are working their tails off; I'm tired after just 2 days, ha! There are a lot of things that matter to me, and I'm sure to you too. A few of my biggies are adoption, foster care, and foreign aid. I'm about to spend some time traveling to other parts of the world where there is no safety net for moms who can't feed their children, where children begging on the streets is a common sight, where there is little access to life-saving drugs that are readily available to you and me, where kids die every single day of preventable diseases and where starvation and malnutrition is a very real thing. Did you know that our government allots only 1% of our total budget to foreign aid? But that 1% amounts to literally millions of lives saved. I love that! I'm proud of our country for that! We are a generous nation. We do a lot of good in the world and I can promise you it has a boomerang effect of coming back in all kinds of positive ways we can't even begin to see on the surface. As a person of faith, I believe we have a moral responsibility to care for the least of these. Jesus was pretty plain about that. I've thought before that's not the governments responsibility, it's ours. But guess what, the government is us. It's a government by the people for the people. It's our tax dollars, if we have an opinion on where they're spent we should speak up. I have a lot of opinions, ha! If you do too, please write or call your congressmen/women and senator and let your voice be heard!
