Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Back-lit mute swan shaking – At certain times of year, especially in the build up to the breeding season, it seems that some adult male swans spend a lot of their time with their wings held in threat posture, even when doing something as mundane as bathing. Here an adult male, backlit by late evening sunlight, has just been feeding underwater and is now shaking the water droplets off its head. By positioning myself to shoot against a dark backdrop, a distant forest in shadow, I’ve been able to highlight not only the swans beautiful plumage but also the jewel-like water droplets being shaken from its head. In moments like this I will simply fire a burst of images as there’s usually only one frame that ends up with the swans eye open, the water droplets and the swans' head in a favourable position. As usual it is the combination of these three factors that make this image the one from the sequence that I will end up processing. It also helps the clarity of the image that it’s taken from water level as this largely obscures the patch of light filled water in which the swan is sitting, or rather creating by the simple act of moving. Had this image been taken from a more elevated position then this swan would appear to be sitting in a patch of brightly coloured water which, in my opinion at least, would be detrimental to the final image. Of course there is a double edge to most aspects of wildlife photography and the benefit of shooting from a higher position means that I would have achieved a mirror like reflection, as opposed to the more abstract reflection that one achieves by shooting at water level. It all comes down to balance at the end of the day and the individual preferences of the photographer so be sure to always seek to create the images that you like, that you prefer which is exactly what I’ve done here.
