Every year, about 250 cities and towns raise their hands for the opportunity to welcome a stage of the 3-week, 2,200-mile Tour de France. Following a largely secretive planning process, the Amaury Sport Organization, which operates the race, selects around 40 of them for the task. Some, like Paris, are regulars. But a few, like Nuits-Saint-Georges, have never been on the route. For the town’s 5,600 or so inhabitants, the honor of inclusion on the list offers benefits thought to be worth the expense and effort needed to accommodate the race. Nuits-Saint-Georges is closer to Switzerland’s capital, Bern, than it is to Paris. The Tour’s seventh stage, a mostly flat trip from Troyes, will end there on Friday. So over the last week, the town’s picturesque streets underwent a festive metamorphosis. On Wednesday, @kiehart photographed Yvan Dufouleur, 52, a prominent local winemaker, at work in his vineyard. “We get publicity for the town, it gets publicity for the region, and of course, for the Nuits-Saint-Georges brand,” he said.
