Happy birthday #ChuckClose! Celebrate with “Stanley II," the artist’s first large portrait in oil paint made in 1980-81, a medium he had not used since 1966. Close and Stanley Rosen, the subject in the painting, met at a beach where the two men’s children were playing together. Garnering critical interest in 1981 because of its rich dialogue between abstraction and representation, “Stanley II” is a contrast to Close’s earlier works’ smooth surfaces.
