One of the most acclaimed painters of Gutai Art Association (1954–72), Guggenheim Abu Dhabi collection artist Shiraga Kazuo rejected convention and sought to liberate his work from the constraints of academic-style painting. By hanging by a rope suspended from the ceiling and using gravity to propel through mounds of paint, he created works that capture the dynamism of the artist’s body. One example is “Chiinsei Botaichū (Female Tiger Incarnated from Earthly Shady Star)” (1961), now on view in Guggenheim Abu Dhabi’s second collection show #TheCreativeAct at Manarat Al Saadiyat.
