Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Mountain hare close up – I had lain next to this hare for a few hours as the rain fell and we both got wetter and wetter. The hare was simply hunkered down, enduring the cold but I was waiting, hoping that at some point he would sit up and shake the water from his fur. As time passed it became increasingly obvious that this wasn’t going to happen but by then I had edged myself closer and closer, all the time working on my 200-400mm lens. I knew that, having invested so much time with this individual that he (his name was Beardie) was entirely trusting of my intentions and as long as I continued to behave respectfully and with great caution that he would continue to allow such intimate working. I became increasingly drawn to the graphic lines in his wet fur and I knew that I wanted to try and capture this kind of image, where it contained nothing but hare and ideally, with a bit of symmetry. I eventually managed to rise slowly to my knees and then to my feet and it was only then that I was able to produce this kind of image. I’m returning to Scotland next January-February and so if anyone is interested in experiencing moments such as these then I will be guiding a maximum of two people per day into the mountains and creating moments such as these. Working up there for 5 weeks solidly allows me to build an encyclopaedic knowledge of the local hares and their characters and this hare, and a number of others, were ones that we were able to turn to time and again, all the time working respectfully and cautiously. As such their naturally confiding nature was allowed to flourish, safe in the knowledge that the human visitors to their mountain home posed no threat and instead just sat close by making strange clicking noises!
