photograph by @susanseubert // I recently had the privilege of observing a swimming polar bear for about 3 hours early one morning at Hornsund, Norway in the Svalbard archipelago. Along with the bear, there were bearded seals hauled out on the near by ice. It took less than 2 seconds for this top predator to take the seal off the ice, then worked about 15-20 minutes in the water to kill the seal. To eat the seal, the polar bear had to take it to a piece of ice that was large enough to support their combined weight, which was no easy feat. #polarbear #ivorygull #climatechange Photographed #onassignment for @National Geographic Travel @natgeoexpeditions Follow @susanseubert for more!
