Editor's Note: we asked Erin, founder of @susiesseniordogs and amazingly compassionate human, if she'd allow us to share this heartfelt reflection of hers. Anyone who knows about the work that SSD does knows the genuine and important impact that senior dog adoption plays in the final days of these hard-to-place dogs' lives. “Two months ago today we said goodbye to our Moby boy. It was a really hard day. And so was the next day. And the next week...and it still is, at moments. Moby's one year spent with us, his last year of life, feels like a steep climb of a roller coaster -- we peaked so high! And then he declined so fast. (Due to liver failure, which we knew about and was the reason why we adopted him.) I think about Moby every day. And I will never-ever regret taking him in, even though just over 365 days later everything we got used to doing together was no more. Losing senior dogs is hard, and that is a truth that comes with adopting an older dog or a sick dog. But I think that loving these vulnerable dogs, and the inevitable pain of letting them go, helps you to love the old, sick, and vulnerable dogs who will come into your life in the future that much stronger. I imagine my heart with these tiny, deep pockets. They are near and close to each other, but they are also each their own. Some of my heart's pockets have already been filled by the dogs I've loved, and lost. And I can only hope I have many, many pockets to be filled up during my lifetime. Old dogs are simply great dogs. I encourage you to not be afraid or focus on losing them, you will surprise yourself with just how strong your heart is. And how amazingly worth it these sweethearts ALWAYS are. ? #seniordog#mobywenttoheaven” writes @susieseniordogs
