#SpeakingInDance | “It’s about being lost in your dancing,” said the choreographer #EliotFeld of his exuberant 1984 work “The Jig Is Up.” Irish folk music is one critical ingredient of this dance; the dancers — teenagers who train at @ballettech — are the other. This week at @thejoycetheater, dancers from #BalletTech Kids Dance perform the jubilant work. Eliot succinctly summed up what 3 dancers — Joyce Ha, Johnson Guo and Kion Gaul — need for the spirited trio: “Spunk.” And in her lengthy solo, a tour de force of precise shapes and spirited dancing, Megan Eng performs with a delicate balance of control and abandon. “I get to be someone who I’m not,” she said. “This person commands attention from the audience. I’m more shy.” But, as Eliot pointed out, even as a child Megan had a feeling for ecstasy: “The extent to which she has taken it for her first big solo? It astounds me. It’s like she has a secret: It’s hers and it’s independent and it’s really quiet. These girls are going to break some hearts.” Possibly even his own, as a choreographer. “If I can’t part with them,” Eliot told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk with a laugh, “I’ll just ask the teachers to leave them back.” @jaibirdn made this video for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly series exploring the world of #dance.
