In certain pockets of the U.S., #HIV is ravaging communities at staggering rates. Last year, @cdcgov predicted that if current rates continue, 1 in 2 African-American gay and bisexual men will be infected with the virus. That compares to a lifetime risk of 1 in 99 for all Americans and 1 in 11 for white gay and bisexual men. To offer more perspective: Swaziland has the world’s highest rate of HIV: 28.8% of the population. In America, the crisis is most acute in Southern states. Jackson, #Mississippi, has the nation’s highest rate — 40% — of gay and bisexual men living with HIV. One of them is Benjamin Jennings, 21, who @ruddyroye photographed here at a support group in May. “I used to keep my feelings bottled up, but then I started opening my mouth,” Benjamin said at his first group meeting. “I did everything to prevent this disease, but because of one slip-up I have it. Now I want to help anyone I can in any type of way. My goal is to not to let anyone judge me or let this disease own me.” Visit the link in our profile to read more in @nytmag, and to see more photos by @ruddyroye.
