June 3rd and the last day of the @hi5sfoundation surf camp also happened to be my brothers 8 year death day. I have never really talked openly about or commemorated his death day other than sitting alone in silence for a time and feeling the pain of missing him deeply in my heart...until I found surfing. Now, I do my best to spend the day on the water, open to whatever the ocean/my Bro sends my way... So I wasn't terribly surprised when a clean set wave rolled through and caught me, I rode the open face...I felt like I was flying...I finished with a little floater and paddled away nearly in tears... my Brother was there and I'm so thankful to have spent sometime with him! Its important to find a way-a space and a place to connect with the ones we can't physically see anymore. I love surfing.
