Capitol Reef's Cathedral Valley was named in 1945 by Charles Kelly, the first superintendent of Capitol Reef. The upward-sweeping, tapering lines, and three dimensional surfaces reminded him of Gothic and Egyptian architecture. I'd have to agree. Upper and Lower Cathedral Valley offer exquisite views of sculptured monoliths with intriguing names such as the Walls of Jericho and the Temples of the Sun, Moon, and Stars. This monolith formation in upper cathedral valley is one of the most impressive along the backcountry route. We camped not far away, and awoke for this stunning sunrise with the entire place all to ourselves. It's a long, dirt road to get here, but I can't suggest enough a night under the stars and a morning wake up view of this.
