Photo by @shonephoto (Robbie Shone) with words by adventure writer and presenter @CharlieBoscoe - In stark contrast to their previous impenetrability, the Lagazuoi Tunnels, perched high above the Falzarego Pass in the Italian Dolomites can now be accessed via a cable car ride and a short walk. Despite this, and the 100 years that have passed since they were used by soldiers to access strategic high mountain vantage points, they remain an eerie and somehow desolate place.

Our “Alpine Iron Roads” mission of exploring, photographing and writing about the huge network of tunnels and via ferratas took us all over the Dolomites, but as is so often the case when travelling, going to these places poses more questions than it answers.
Who sat here? What did they see? How did they feel as they scanned this view for signs of the enemy approach?
