More wine than I can drink.

These massive handmade clay pots are called qvevris (qwev-ry), and have been the traditional wine making vessels in Georgia (the country) for at least 8,000 years.

Once they are constructed and fired, they are lined with beeswax and buried in the ground, ready to be filled with wine grapes. These natural wines often continue skin contact for many months, giving them a rich tannic flavor and for white grapes, an orange color.

These wines are worth visiting Georgia for, and if you do come, make you sure you set up visits out to the wine region with my friend Sarah @TasteGeorgia. She might even be able to get you to this qvevri maker's home to see these gigantic pots for yourself. .
