When we fixate on living up to expectations and accomplishing career benchmarks we can forget about the reason that we started in the first place. Climbing is an incredibly mental sport. I often say this, but sometimes I forget to let the significance of this fact crystallize in my understanding of my own journey. Motivation happens in waves; for me, sometimes my own has more force and consistency than other times.
In January I began a 3-month cycle of training with @patxiusobiaga_pucseries
My plan for 2017 includes a variety of climbing, but my first step in preparing for the goals I have was to develop my foundation of strength and endurance through single pitch #sportclimbing. One of my favorite places to do this is in the Catalunya region. When I first arrived, I had to remember to be patient through the process and to be kind to myself through the stages of my performance. My initial objective was a technical 8c that is very favorable to my strengths as a climber. Once I completed this climb, I felt like I began to develop a deeper sense of confidence both in myself, and also in the process of projects.
I feel satisfied with my trip outcome. I didn't climb any new 9a's, but I ticked off a handful of personal goals of mine, and most importantly, enjoyed climbing to an extent that I have not felt so palpable over the last few years. To me, climbing is my catharsis; my escape yet also my global community. I could stay in Spain for several more weeks and still not want to leave. Though, unfortunately Trump disregards the importance of protecting our planet.
