By letting gravity replace the paintbrush, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi collection artist Motonaga Sadamasa sought to set paint free. Foregoing the precision of the artist’s hand, Motonaga let the paint flow together to create amorphous shapes through chance and indeterminacy. As he said, “The universe never ceases for a single instant to change, and we experience this. Transformation is nothing other than renewal, so it is only natural that we should try to create new phenomena or that we discover these with astonishment.” “Work Green/Red 999” (1959) is on view as part of Guggenheim Abu Dhabi’s second collection show, "The Creative Act" at Manarat Al Saadiyat.
