Rolling mountains, a fiery sunrise and an unparalleled view all make for a gorgeous photo from #GreatSmokyMountains National Park. 2016 Artist-In-Resident Tom Haxby captured this shot on his second or third visit to Oconaluftee Overlook. “This was one of those #sunrises where the ‘wow! factor’ just kept increasing with each passing minute. Spectacular scenes like this don't come along often,” he says of the moment. As a retired forester, Haxby’s time as an Artist-in-Residence was not just about the photographs but also a chance to learn more about the ecology of @greatsmokynps. It’s an experience that he’ll always treasure because of the wonderful people he met and the peace and tranquility he found when exploring the park in search of photographs.
