UPDATE: @rei wrote a very nice apology and tagged me in the photo. I appreciate their response, and am thankful for everyone's support! I felt it important to bring light to cases like these, in order to discuss athlete representation in our community. Let's keep it going! ?? Original post: I want to start a dialogue about the athlete/media/brand triangle ? on social media, where photos get passed around so easily. A friend brought this photo to my attention today ➡️ It was a genuine moment of joy right after I sent Ambrosia, the first female ascent of a 50ft boulder, and shared on the @rei account (unbeknownst to me). @rei tagged it with #ForceOfNature as part of their most recent marketing campaign, supporting the representation of women in the outdoors, and credited @naytonrosales with the photo. Unfortunately, the credit did not include myself. After attempting to contact @rei and politely asking for 'model' credit, and receiving no response, I have mixed feelings. As a professional athlete, there is a balance between accomplishment and promotion. I work with brands I believe in, and those brands, in turn, support me. And yes, there is money involved. So when brands use my likeness for marketing with no permission, no money, and not even the courtesy to acknowledge my account - where does that leave us? Where does accountability lie as far as social media credit? Who benefits from the work/likeness of someone else, and by how much? What kinds of permissions are asked, and granted? This is not the first time this has happened, but it is the first time by such a high-profile company. I am not necessarily asking these questions to point fingers or blame anyone (as a former @rei employee, I believe this company has always had good intentions), but I am a little bummed and would like to start a conversation about cases like these. I used to contribute to a high-profile brand's Instagram account and I know it's not that hard to, at the very least, tag the people that they are posting pictures of. I just want credit where credit is due ✌? #rei #rei1440project #climbing #athletes #OptOutside
