A critically endangered male Eastern bongo at the @greatplainszoo.
Bongos are the largest of all African forest antelope species. They are distinguishable by their reddish coat with white stripes and long spiraled antlers. Bongos are the only spiraled-horned antelope species in which both sexes have horns. This subspecies can be found in mountainous regions of Kenya, but unfortunately their numbers are drastically declining due to increased hunting, disease, and habitat loss to illegal logging. Today, less than 140 Eastern bongos exist in the wild. .
