It's five minutes out of your Sunday that could help you make a difference, THE DIFFERENCE, the world needs!!! This week's post is from Samantha Herron, a student campaigner at Chico State. "I first encountered the devastating effects of climate change during my senior year of high school. During this time I was volunteering at a rescue center in San Diego. Malnourished sea lion rescue in surrounding areas had reached a record high that has been declared an "Unusual Mortality Event" by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Research has shown that lack of food for these mammals is caused by an increase in ocean temperatures and destroyed marine ecosystems directly due to a rise in climate. While volunteering it was also not uncommon to rescue mammals that suffered deep cuts from plastic bands or fishing wire tangled around their bodies.
While rehabilitating emaciated and injured sea lions and then releasing them was rewarding, I felt it was the LEAST I could do. These mammals were directly suffering because of our wrong doings and it was hard for me to grasp why nobody was being held accountable for the air and waste pollution that was steadily obliterating our oceans. This experience, although horrific, was eye-opening. I realized that the pollutants we release into our environment are not just negatively impacting our own lives, but also are destroying the lives of our animals, our earth, and our future generations. I have decided to be a voice for those who do not have one. This is why I have joined the #PutAPriceOnIt campaign.
