Over the past few months, the #StatueofLiberty has re-emerged as a symbol amid a polarizing debate about immigration. Look closely and you’ll find #? all over the place: on signs, at protests and speeches, on T-shirts, on magazine and newspaper covers, and in a flood of images and memes. When “Liberty Enlightening the World” was dedicated in 1886, it wasn’t meant to be a symbol of immigration. Its meaning shifted over time because of its prominence in New York Harbor, near Ellis Island. The more recent attention is reverberating at the statue’s home. In January and February, visitors to @statueellisnps surged. The numbers can probably be explained — at least in part — by the relatively mild winter weather. Still, on an unusually cold morning recently, hundreds of people milled about the monument. @ニューヨーク・タイムズ interviewed more than 3 dozen visitors, and many said their visit had been motivated by the national debate on immigration.
