Rock on! Sea otters use rocks and other hard objects to break open well-armored food, like marine snails and crabs. A new study by Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute scientists and partners reveals that individual tool-using sea otters along the California coastline aren’t closely related to one another. According to the study’s authors, this may be partial evidence that sea otters have been using tools for many thousands—or even millions—of years and are therefore innately predisposed to do so. That's otter-ly amazing!
